The Port's Gate
Project Type Urban Design - Studio 4
Year July 2020
Location Haifa’s port, Israel
In the near future, Israel will be the densest country from the OECD countries. We don’t have enough land reserves to populate all the people, so we need to build more and in a higher density. In our urban design we examined European city models such as Paris, in order to
find the best solution for the population growth rate as a futuristic planning for the expected high density. We tried to find the best combination between a building’s height, considering the human scale and the population that will be in Israel in about 20 years from now. Our vision was to design A mixed-use walkable neighbourhood alongside an active sea front of the Haifa’s port, which nowadays is occupied and does not open to the public. Our goals were to open the view and the approach to the sea, to create a quarter that is active throughout the day with a diverse population and create an urban municipal program alongside local program. Our planning principals were to create a green infrastructure of open spaces with different hierarchies and a traffic network that links them, to create openings at different levels in the buildings, in order to open the view from the back to the front have a central boulevard and a promenade.
